Our Mission

There are many problems in the world. Environmental destruction is as serious as ever with over 7 million hectares of forest disappearing every year. There is always a war taking place somewhere in the world and a blind eye turned to the overt killings that are happening. Poverty is not being eliminated: the gap between rich and poor is simply getting wider. Meanwhile, in affluent countries youths have lost sight of the meaning of life and shut themselves away in a room, and we turn on each other in violence.

Yet we have trouble perceiving these problems as our own. Because of the way in which they are portrayed by the existing media, as observers we feel removed from the situation. This is probably the limitation in the tool’s design, so to speak. Due to the nature of society and our relationship with each other, conventional media has become ineffective as a tool for identifying and solving the problems in the world. Thus there is the need for a new tool to enable each of us to really discover these problems and confront them. That’s why we started Realiser, to shift the idea of these problems being someone else’s to being our own.

Our aim is to provide a new form of media, a “tool” to allow each of us to uncover and confront the world’s problems.

The Realiser Way

Media through which ordinary people, not professional writers, around the world relay information about what is happening around them is called alternative media. Realiser is aspiring to take this alternative media a step further in two ways:

(1) Providing a direct link between the reader and the situation

Where conventional media merely presents the problem, at Realiser we seek to provide suggestions on solving it. We try to find alternative ways of approaching the issue and test them out. Our motto is “understanding not criticism”. By doing this, we hope to provide interested readers with the first step to feeling that the world’s problems are their own as well as providing information which can link them directly to the situation.

(2) Collaborative research

Ordinary people around the world work together to research and write articles collaboratively. Based on joint research done on a particular topic by members in various places worldwide it is possible to contemplate an issue from a perspective different from the one-sided view presented by the mass media, and discover a new way of seeing the situation through comparison. It is also possible to gather reactions to an issue faced in a particular area from many regions. The information you receive passively and the information you get from going out and researching yourself are totally different in depth and quality. Another of our mottos is “from passive observation to active participation.”

(3) Unit action

A group of people with a common interest get together and do things like conduct research, exchange information and hold events. As of August, 2009 we have the Palm Oil Unit, Overseas Childhood Education Unit and paid research units.

(4) Providing information (NGO and NPO event information, messages from members worldwide, book reviews, etc)

We display information on activities by NGOs and NPOs dealing with problems related to our articles and unit activities. We also display messages from members scattered across the globe.
